A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that falls in it and drains off of it goes into a common body of water.  Water that flows across the watershed moves down hill into streams, rivers and lakes and often carries pollutants from the surface with it.  Watersheds can be as small as a footprint or large enough to encompass all the land that drains water into rivers that drain into the Mississippi and eventually to the Gulf of Mexico.
Five watersheds are found within Champaign County:

Embarras • Kaskaskia • Sangamon
Vermilion-Wabash • Wabash River Valley
